With a ¬†large number of applicants received for the inaugural Individual Athlete Support Program, it is testiment to the number of elite athletes in the Sunraysia region. Six athletes were selected to start the 12 month program which will begin in mid May. The athletes chosen¬†were aged¬† from 12-17 years of age and are competing at a state and/or national level in their chosen sport.
Makinley Blows has excelled at cricket where she recently represented Victoria in the under 15 national championships. Locally she repesented Sunraysia in both the girls and boys team. Makinley was part of the successful Mallee¬†Murray team which came runner up at the Victorian Championships in January.
Robert Broadhead has experienced successful in the sport of athletics; representing the state last year at the National All-Schools Competition held in Brisbane. In the 400m, with a time of 51.9 sec he qualified for the Australian Youth Championships.
Sarah Broadhead has also performed extremely well in athletics. Her strengths are throwing events, although she¬†recently has had excellent results in the 200m hurdles. Last year she represented the state at the National All Schools competition in Brisbane, competing in shot put and discus.
Stefan Cifra is another one of¬†Mildura’s outstanding athletes who has excelled in his chosen sport of¬†athletics. He is a member of Mildura & Districts Little Athletics Club and competed in the State Individual Athletics Championships in March 2012¬†were he won a gold medal in both the 100m and the 200m. He is is the current record holder in both of these events.
Ellen Fraser has been competing in the sport of triathlon for the past 4 years, and in that short time has achieved some excellent results. She has qualified for the Australian age group team to compete at the World Championships in New Zealand in October this year. Last¬† year¬† Ellen was awarded the 16-19 sprint distance state champion.
Rhiann O’Donnell has demonstrated that she has the skills to match it with the elite cricketers in the state. Rhiann was a member of the Mallee Murray girls under 14 team which competed at the state championships where she was the 4th best batsmen and 6th best bowler. She was also selected in the Victorian under 15 girls cricket team in 2011 as a bottom age player. Locally she plays¬†in¬†the boys and girls cricket competitions.
As part of the individual athlete support program, the athletes will receive a 12 month membership from Club Aquarius where they will be provided with individual strength and conditioning programs. They will also be able to attend monthly athlete and career education sessions and access the SAS medical service provider network.
The program starts next week with fitness testing and musculoskeletal screening.
