2013 Volleyball Program Trials

The Sunraysia Academy of Sport volleyball program will start in September

The inclusion of volleyball in the Sunraysia Academy of Sport fits within the Victorian volleyball development pathway. The program is supported by both Sunraysia Volleyball and Volleyball Victoria and provides athletes with the mental, physical and technical skills to reach their full potential in the sport of volleyball.

The volleyball program has been one of the Academy’s most successful programs with a large number of athletes each year selected to represent Victoria at the National Junior Volleyball Championships. Each year a number of athletes from the program have been invited to attend the Australian camp in December with the last program producing 2 athletes; Zachary Hermans and Breanna Doorne, both selected in the U17 Australian squad.

Three athletes; Riley Stone, Breanna Doorne and Zachary Hermans succeeded in making it into the top side in their age group. Another twelve athletes were selected in the Victorian West side.

Sunraysia’s dominance in volleyball in Victoria is due to the highly skilled coaches we have in the area which are involved in the program. Head coaches; Paul Freckleton (girls coach) and Brad Hassell (boys coach) have both been involved in coaching in the state program and have coached the Academy program for a number of years. They will be assisted by Brad Mason who has been the most successful athlete to come out of the program after having a stint at the Australian Institute of Sport, representing Australia and more recently playing in Canada. Brad Mason will bring a wealth a playing experience and will be able to assist the young and upcoming juniors in Sunraysia.

The coaches will work under the guidance of Steve Benson to implement a well-rounded performance program. Steve, originally from Mildura has had a very successful volleyball playing career, representing Australia and is now the High Performance Manager for volleyball in Australia.

This year the program has been extended to provide for an Advanced Squad as well as a Development Squad.
