2014 SAS Baseball Program Trials

Sunraysia Academy of Sport to Build on Success of 2013 Baseball Program.

After a very successful 2013 Baseball program, the Sunraysia Academy of Sport will provide talented young baseball players the opportunity to be a part of this year’s SAS baseball program.

The last program saw seven of the twenty athletes in the program make a South Australian State Baseball team across various junior age groups. All players in the program played for Sunraysia in the Winter Championships in 2013 and one player, Charlie Ashcroft, received a baseball scholarship to attend St Cloud College in the United States beginning in July this year.

The Sunraysia Academy of Sport (SAS) program personnel will work closely with Baseball Victoria and Baseball SA to devise a Baseball program that provides add on benefits to the development of local players that will assist them in their endeavours to be selected for either the Victorian or SA State teams. It is hoped that participation in the program will lead to players reaching MLBAAP, College, ABL, Professional/International Baseball and ultimately help increase the pool of players that can represent Australia.

The major objectives of the program are:

1)      Identification of regional athletes with long term characteristics for high performance baseball;

2)      Provide a high level of baseball specific training;

3)      Provide athletes the tools necessary for them to develop as high level athletes; athlete career and education, strength and conditioning, fitness testing, access to a medical service provider network;

4)      Increase the number of regionally based junior baseball athletes within our region;

5)      To involve and support the personal development of regionally based baseball coaches in the program for the betterment of future baseball athletes.

Specifically the inclusion of Baseball into the SAS would fit within the Victorian and South Australian baseball development pathway.

The program will be limited to a maximum of 20 athletes and will be open to boys and girls aged 12-19 years of age.

Athletes selected in the SAS Baseball program must satisfy the following criteria:

  1. Players selected in a Victorian or SA State team or squad in 2013, or selected in an All-Star team at the conclusion of a winter or country championship.
  2. Additional members may be included in the program at the discretion of the Technical Director of Coaching (TDC).
  3. To be eligible for entry, athletes (boys or girls) must be:

a)      Registered and playing with a Club in the Sunraysia Baseball League or the Riverland Baseball League.

b)      Eligible for any of the National Youth Baseball Championships, held annually in January, or the National Girls Baseball Championship, held annually at Easter.

  1. Athletes in the SAS Baseball program must make any SAS activity their priority over other sporting pursuit.

Tony Probert, a very experienced coach based in Mildura, who has had extensive experience coaching at state level, has been once  gain selected to be the program Head Coach.  Specialist coaches will be sourced from within the region to be a part of the program. Tony will work with the TDC to plan and implement a well-rounded performance program using the Australian Baseball Federation coaching syllabus.
