The Sports Draft program it is a ‘talent transfer’ program that aims to contribute towards Australia’s high performance sport targets by providing outstanding Australian athletes with an opportunity to transfer into a targeted Olympic Sport. Similar to last year the AIS is looking for athletes interested in transferring into the sports of canoe and kayak (sprint), track cycling (sprint), rugby 7s (women’s) and the combat sports of boxing, judo and taekwondo.
The AIS is looking for physically fit athletes, with strong work ethic and outstanding character to take part in state based testing selection trials. From there athletes who show potential will then be located in local clubs in selected areas for a familiarisation period (3-4 weeks funded by the AIS) before a final selection trial which will vary from sport to sport.
Please note, Sports Draft is not a Talent Identification program for athletes already competing in the targeted sports and ‘in the system’, this program is designed to fast track to athletes to transfer into the targeted sports and provide them with high quality coaching, a good club environment and expose them to many elements of high performance sport during camps at the AIS.
