A number of Sunraysia Academy of Sport athletes competed recently at the 2012 Athletics SA All Schools Invitational held at Santos Stadium, Adelaide, in late October.
The standard of competition was high with the event also selection for the Athletics SA State Team to compete in the Athletics Australia  2012 Australian All-Schools Competition to be held from 30/11-2/12 at the Domain Athletics Centre, Hobart.
Two of our more senior athletes; Sarah & Robert Broadhead were successful in gaining selection in the SA State team with outstanding performances. To achieve selection both athletes had to achieve a gold or silver in their event and reach the Australian qualifying standard.
Sarah qualified in the hammer throw, achieving a gold medal and throwing 35.91m. The national qualifying distance was 30m. Sarah also came 5th in discus,5th in shot put and 5th in javelin, Achieving a personal best in shot put with a throw of 10.50 metres.
Robert qualified in the 400m and 400m hurdles, achieving a silver medal in both events with a time of 51.73 sec and 58.30 sec respectively. Rob also came 5th in triple jump.
Both did extremely well considering they were competing in the Under 18 age group at only 16 years of age and have another year to compete in that same age group.
Other Academy athletes to compete were:
- Nicholas Sleep – 6th shot put and 3rd in discus
- Jayden Byrne – 1st in 3000m (unfortunately was outside the national qualifying time) and 4th in 1500m
- Kelly Rayner – 2nd 3000m (outside national qualifying times)
- Taylor Hand – missed out on the 100m final by one spot, being the 9th fastest
All athletes gained valuable experience competing on a synthetic track in Adelaide and competing against quality opposition.
