SAS Athletes Bring Home A Swag of Medals

A large contingent of athletes from Mildura travelled to Adelaide to compete at the 2014 Athletics SA State Junior and Open Championships, which were held on the 28th February to the 2nd March at Santos Stadium. In total, Academy athletes; past and present won 35 medals; 8 Gold, 13 Silver and 14 Bronze.

The results were as follows:

Sarah Broadhead – Gold U20 Hammer Throw 4kg, Silver U20 400m Hurdles, Silver U20 Triple Jump, Bronze U20 Discus Throw 1kg, Bronze Open Women Hammer Throw

Robert Broadhead – Gold U20 400m, Silver U20 200m, Bronze Open 400m Hurdles

Nicholas Sleep – Gold U20 Hammer Throw 6kg, Silver U20 Discus 1.75kg

Montana MacFarlane – Gold U17 2000m Steeplechase

Taylor Hand– Silver U18 400m Hurdles, Silver U18 100m Hurdles, Bronze U18 100m, Bronze U18 200m

Mebal Singh – Silver U16 Discus Throw 1kg, Silver U16 Javelin Throw 500g, Bronze U16 Shot Put 3kg

Asare Amoafo – Silver U17 400m, Silver U17 200m

Brodie Jackson – Silver U17 Long Jump

Kelly Rayner – Bronze U17 400m, Bronze U17 800m

Jayden Curtis – Bronze U15 1500m, Bronze U15 800m

Neve Goodrem (former SAS athletics athlete)- Gold U17 5000m walk, Gold U17 1500m, Gold U17 3000m walk, Bronze U17 800m, Bronze U17 2000m Steeplechase

Breanna Doorne (former SAS volleyball athlete) – Gold U18 High Jump, Silver U18 400m, Bronze U18 LJ, Bronze U18 800m

The Athletics SA Junior National Team has been selected with four athletes from Sunraysia being named. Montana MacFarlane (U17 Girls 2000m Steeplechase), Sarah Broadhead (U20 Female Hammer Throw) and Robert Broadhead (U20 Male 400m Hurdles) will all be competing at the 2014 Australian Junior Championships once again. Taylor Hand ( U18 girls 100m Hurdles and 400m Hurdles) will be making her debut at these Championships after bringing home a medal at the National All Schools Championships late last year.

All athletes are in great form going into the Nationals after an intensive training period and impressive performances at last weekend’s State Championships.

The Academy congratulates all athletes who competed at Athletics SA State Championships and wishes all selected athletes well in their preparation for the 2014 Australian Junior National Championships to be held at Sydney Olympic Park from 12-16 March.
