SAS Athletics Information session

Sunraysia Academy of Sport will provide an information session outlining the athletics program on Tuesday 18th September at Chaffey Secondary College from 5:15-6pm in the theatrette.

It is with much excitement that I announce the Sunraysia Academy of Sport will provide budding young athletes the opportunity to be a part of the inaugural SAS athletics program.  The program will be run with the support of Mildura & District Little Athletics Club and Athletics SA. The Sunraysia Academy of Sport 2012/13 Athletics program will provide junior athletes with a high performance sporting program within our region by enhancing pathways for young athletes to achieve their elite sporting and personal ambitions.

The initial program will be limited to approximately 10 athletes and will be open to boys and girls aged 12-17 years of age.

Athletes selected in the SAS athletics program must satisfy the following criteria:

  1. A member of the Mildura & District Little Athletics club.
  2. Athletes with a willingness to learn and improve
  3. Athletes in the SAS Athletics program must make any SAS activity their priority over other sporting pursuits
  4. Athletes will be assessed against the ability to meet the 2012 qualifying standards for the state little athletics championships in their chosen discipline(s)

The program will be structured in a way that each athlete will receive a training program from a specialist athletics coach appointed from Athletics SA. The coach will coach the athlete by correspondence. A Mildura based coach will be appointed who will provide support for athletes at a weekly group training session and will video athletes performance for coach feedback.

This program will include higher level coaching opportunities for the athletes, as well as sports science and other beneficial experiences for aspiring athletes. Local coaches will be welcome to attend and observe.

The program will include:

  1. On Track Training

a)      Weekly supervised training session from October through to March

b)      Opportunity to be a part of the Riverland athletics squad (during school holidays)

  1. Off Track Training

a)      Monthly Athlete & Career education seminars for athletes, parents and coaches

b)      Fitness testing

c)       Musculoskeletal screening

d)      Individualised strength and conditioning program

e)      Access to medical service providers

Athletes will also have the opportunity to compete at various state athletic events (depending on qualification).

Interested athletes and their parents must attend the information session on Tuesday 18th September at Chaffey Secondary College from 5:15-6pm where the program will be further explained. Application forms will be handed out at the end of the information night.
