Sunraysia Academy of Sport run monthly Athlete Career and Education seminars for all athletes, parents and coaches involved in either the sporting or individual athlete programs. This month the seminar topic will focus on sport psychology. With no local sports psychologist in Mildura, Michael Inglis has accepted the invitation to come up from Melbourne.
The Sunraysia Academy of Sport focus on supporting athletes in a holistic way; not only physically but also mentally as well. At an elite level there is often not much difference in the skill level between athletes. To obtain the ‘edge’ athletes must develop mental skills to be able to cope with a variety of situations in both their personal and sporting lives.
Sport Psychologist, Michael Inglis has been working in the mental health field for 13 years having completed his Masters in Sport Psychology at Victoria University in 2008. Michael has worked in community, hospital, corporate settings and more recently in private practice since 2009. He has worked with both adults & adolescents through his work with Headspace.
Michael’s approach with athletes & teams is holistic as he focuses on strategies to assist performance. He recognises how personal issues ‘off the field’ can impact on an athletes enjoyment of their chosen sport & outcome performance. His theoretical framework is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) where he introduces both cognitive & behavioural strategies that assist athletes to best manage themselves at training or during performances.
Since 2010, Michael has been a consultant with the AFL Players Association (AFLPA) working with athletes from multiple sporting backgrounds including; cycling, basketball, AFL, golf & netball. In addition he has worked with junior triathletes, distance runners and athletes from adventure sports and AFL juniors in the TAC Under 18.
Michael specialises in anxiety management, goal setting, self-talk strategies & relaxation techniques. His thesis discussed how to improve communication between athletes & coaches, as well as forming positive team dynamics. Michael has a philosophy in identifying strategies that get the best out of any athlete, no matter the standard they perform in.
It has been 12 months in the planning and we are very excited to be able to invite athletes, parents and coaches who are not involved in the Sunraysia Academy of Sport to come and be a part of the seminar. It will be held on Thursday 23rd August from 6-8pm in the Chaffey Secondary College theatrette. The cost will be $5 per person.
The Sunraysia Academy of Sport provide support to talented athletes in the Sunraysia Region with their sporting and personal development as they strive to reach their potential.
