Seven athletes from Mildura travelled to Townsville to compete at the 2013 Australian All Schools Athletics Championships, which were held on the 6-8th December 2013. For most athletes it was their first experience at competing at a National level. For others, such as Sarah and Robert Broadhead they have represented South Australia on numerous occasions and were rewarded with Robert Broadhead announced as the boys team captain and Sarah Broadhead the girls vice-captain. Local Mildura coach, Emily McClelland, travelled with the athletes to Townsville to provide support and encouragement.
Athletes competed for South Australia with a team of over 90 athletes sent from that state alone. Athletes were not only competing individually for medals but also points were awarded depending on their performance towards the team title. At the end of the meet, these points were calculated and South Australia won the Small States Cup.
Taylor Hand was the only Sunraysia athlete to receive a medal, winning a silver medal in the U16 girls 4 x 100m relay. Taylor ran the third leg in the relay and ran a brilliant race to put the team into medal contention going in to the final leg.
Individually, Robert Broadhead was the stand out performer coming 4th in the U18 boys 400m Hurdles with a personal best time of 55.30 sec. Unfortunately Robert missed a medal by 0.1 of a second.
