SAS Board of Management
The Sunraysia Academy of Sport is an autonomous not for profit organisation that is governed by a Board of Management. The board plays an important role in an organisations’ success. When appointing board members, skills or competencies are highly regardedÂ as the aim is to have a wide range of knowledge and skills to tackle all of a board’s responsibility effectively. It is often referred to as “balancing the board”.A Balanced Board is an Effective Board. Â The SAS Board often have several qualities in common. These can include:
- Willingness to provide constructive honesty
- The ability to know when it is appropriate to challenge the organisationâ€™s leadership and when to let executives do their job
- Respect for other board members
- Willingness to listen to and seek out othersâ€™ opinions
- Commitment to preparing for and attending board meetings.
Below members form the Academy’s Board of Management with strategic direction and governance their primary focus.
Current SAS Board of Management Members:
- Mr Gary Simpson (Chairperson)
Gary is the Chief Executive Officer of Mallee Accommodation Support Program. Gary worked for many years at Sunraysia Community Health Services as their Executive Manager of Services Support. Gary resided in Adelaide where he was the Executive Officer of Cycling South Australia. A healthy background in leadership and sport.
- Mrs Carmel Mackay (Vice Chairperson)
Carmel is the Executive Officer of Mallee Sports Assembly since 2001. Carmel oversees, plans and manages all the Assembly’s staff and programs across Mildura, Swan Hill, Gannawarra and Buloke municipalities. Carmel also manages the day-to-day financials, staff and administrative operations of the agency and its other activities, additionally all the budget and the Committee of Management reports for these operations.
Prior to thatÂ in September 1998 she was the Program manager for the All Abilities Program.
- Susan Watts
Susan has been involved as a sports administrator locally with Mildura Lawn Tennis Club, and the Three Colours Soccer Club. Â She was also the Sunraysia Academy of Sport Program manager and Acting Executive Officer. and the Football Federation Sunraysia. Susan currently is the General Manager of Football Federation Sunraysia.
- Aleesha Davis
Aleesha has a passion of being involved in the local community. She plays netball at Merbein, but has been involved with swimming and basketball in her younger years. Aleesha is a strong advocate for youth leadership and retention in the region, and is the future mentor of the Rotary Youth Leadership Program and aims to be a mentor in the MASP Kokoda Youth Mentoring Program next year.
- Bryan Wilson
Bryan competed at both Local, State, National and International level in shooting for more than 30 years. Â He has competed in four Olympic Games and two Commonwealth Games winning a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in 1994. Â His history includes competing at numerous World Cups and World Championships. Bryan has been supported by the Victorian Institute of Sport and the Australian Institute of Sport and is a qualified coach and a life member of the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia. WhenÂ living in Melbourne he set up and ran monthly coaching clinics for up and coming shooters and also arranged National Coaching Clinics. Given Bryan’s background in competing in sport at the highest level and the knowledge and skills he can offer to the Sunraysia Sports Academy Board and to the Executive Officer is invaluable.
